Cliche Love
A/N: Now being written as a standalone. Find it on my profile! Maeve sat alone in her grand living room twisting the three carat princess cut diamond ring on her ring finger. A ring with only a social significance in her two months long marriage. "Mrs Flynn, your tea is ready." The forty year of housemaid informed her. Mrs Flynn, what a joke. She had his name but not his heart. "Thank you, I'll be right there." At half past five each day she'd sit in the balcony across the first floor hall and drink her tea. A tradition she started upon falling in love with the view. Maeve Flynn at twenty four got married to a man of great wealth Seth Flynn for what was a business proposal. Her father had refused to acknowledge his fault and all of a sudden three months back she faced the consequences.Seth wasn't a immoral man, nor was he cruel just indifferent. Though Maeve never got to loving him, she sure hoped she could spend her married life with a friend of sort yet never had they exchanged any proper words alone. It seemed like they worked together instead of living together. They both gave each other space and knew enough of how the other person functioned.
On their honeymoon both spent time working on their own projects. Maeve Allen was the heiress of a million dollar company which she worked on with every bone in her body. Not like she had anything else to do, with a non-existent social life and a husband she treated like a coworker, work was her only escape. "Mrs Flynn, I'm sorry to disturb you but Mr Flynn is here." She was startled, never had he come home before nine without prior information. And it was always due to some fund raising event or charity. Suddenly it hit her, she had an event to attend to and had told him of it but arriving this early for that still didn't seem right. "Is he asking for me?" Why else would Mrs Rose want to inform her of his arrival. "Yes, he has a couple of people with him too. Do you want me to prepare an outfit?" Maeve simply nodded watching Mrs Rose leave.
She continued to sit there for a few more minutes just staring at the wide stretch of green land. "Thank you, Mrs Rose. Please inform him that I'll be just a minute."
Maeve wore the knee length peach dress with her nude heels and a pair of pearls in her ear. She combed her waist length hair and left them cascading down her back.
She tried on her fake smile and upon reaching a satisfactory expression she left her room. Even after marriage, Seth and her never shared a room. It was sort of a silent agreement between the two. "There she is." His warm welcome was only a show for what looked like his business partners. "I'm sorry for the wait, gentlemen. I was caught by surprise." She joined the drama he was putting on, taking his hand that he offered to her. She sat beside him on the sofa with the three men sitting across. "We're sorry to come unannounced like this, it was a sudden meeting." The youngest of the three said with a charming smile. "Maeve, this is Jake Herondale , his father and Uncle were hoping to invest in your company so I brought them over." He pointed at the lot. Maeve frowned. "I don't mean to sound unwelcoming but I do have an assistant who is more than capable of arranging a proper meeting." Maeve said, placing both her hands on her knees. There was one rule she refused to break after her father's betrayal. Never mix personal relations with work and she had made this clear to Seth yet here she found herself with investors he brought to their house at such an hour. "No, we are old partners of Mr Flynn's company. Recently the board was going over the ideas of joining the two companies. After all you two are married." Jake's Uncle was the one who spoke but after his short speech she turned to her husband. What surprised her was that even he sat with wide eyes, like he didn't know of this."Mr Herondale, I'm not sure when this transpired. My wife and I have very different professional lives and we'd like to keep it that way. From what Jake told me, you were planning to invest in her company." Seth said, sending an apologetic glance her way which surprised her more than it should have. "Seth, the board thinks your marriage is fake. Everyone is aware of Mr Allens business drowning before your convenient engagement." Maeve was past angry. "I'm sorry, I will not tolerate strangers speaking of my father that way. What you think of our marriage holds little to no relevance to me. Our companies will remain separated and hopefully you won't drag Seth's relationship with me into the business he works day and night on." She said in a passive voice. "I will take your leave now. I sincerely wish that you consider my husband work and not his love life as a basis of analysing his capabilities." She stood up, straightening her dress. "Maeve, please." Jake stood up along with her and caught a hold of her wrist. An action that didn't sit well with Seth nor Maeve. "Seeing as I am not your friend, I'll have to kindly ask you to call me Mrs Flynn and refrain for physical contact. Thank you." She said through a stern face. "We'll discuss more later. As you can see you've upset my wife so I'd have to ask you to leave." Seth cut through."You should reconsider what we said, Seth. A convenience marriage will not sit well with the board." Mr Herondale warned. "I'm grateful for your thought. David escort them out please." Seth called the house butler who immediately handed them their coats and helped them out. Maeve was about to leave when Seth caught hold of her wrist. She looked at his hand and then at him with a raised eyebrow. "I'm sorry, I know you don't like it when I meddle with your work." His blue eyes stared back at her sincerely."I'm sorry too, I may have angered them." "They deserved it. I wasn't aware of their ulterior motives." Seth said, Maeve was still stuck on he fact that he hadn't let go of her hand. "It's alright. Did you get my email?" She wanted to cringe at their communication means. "Yes, I did. Which is why I came early. We leave at nine?" She nodded. She had to attend the event tonight along with Seth as normal couples do."Wear a red tie." After an hour and a half Maeve looked at herself in the mirror her floor length red gown dipped all the way down at the back exposing her entire back. The front was a plain V-neck showing off her curves. She left her pearl earrings but put her hair high up in a bun with a few stray stands dangling by the sides. Seth shared the same floor with her, just a couple of doors down the hall. So when she walked out of her room after putting on black stilletoes she found herself facing her husband who looked undeniable handsome in his black Armani and undone red tie. "You look stunning." Seth was never a man shy of giving compliments quite the opposite, really. He showered her with them. Even with four inches below her, she had to look up to see his eyes. She knew Seth was gifted with the perfect features yet she had to keep her hormones on check. "Thank you, you don't look so bad yourself, except the tie." She pointed out. "I can't seem to get it right. You'd think years if practice would make it better, I'll have to ask David." He grumbled under his breath. "I'll do it." Maeve volunteered before she could stop herself. When she stepped forward to reach his tie, she tripped over the carpet and would've touched the ground if not for her husband who was quick to grab her waist. Maeve was more than aware of his hands touching her bare back and straightened herself as fast as she could. But even when she stood by herself again, he didn't let go.
He looked into his striking blue eyes and cocked her head to one side. "Get started." He replied in a low voice, gesturing to his tie. Maeve with shaking hands got to work, his hands still on her waist.
"You can let go of me now." She whispered, almost done with the perfect tie knot. "Why?" He asked, as if what she said was completely absurd. "Because I'm not falling." "Maybe you should try." She looked up at him, somehow they had got closer. Maeve couldn't free herself from his eyes which held her in place. He inched closer, she stood where she was. The only movement she made was closing her eyes when his breath hit her cheek. Maeve Allen never had time for a serious boyfriend, maybe that's why when Seth kissed her it felt like her world had turned upside down or perhaps it was because of Seth Flynn himself."I'm not sure what that means." She murmured as they separated. "For your husband to kiss you?" "Yes." "That doesn't speak good of me, does it?" "Se-" He didn't let her finish as he took her into a mind numbing kiss again. ******
